About

Film & discussion. Fyodor Dostoevsky is one of the most adapted writers in film history. And that is no coincidence. His novels are engines of dramatic tension, filled with characters wrestling with their contradictions, their guilt, their mystical yearnings and their darkest impulses. Crime and Punishment, White Nights, The Idiot… His works carry within them everything cinema loves: intense inner conflicts, oppressive atmospheres, destinies on a knife edge. His heroes are antiheroes ahead of their time, his plots modern tragedies. More than enough to inspire the greatest filmmakers for over a century. This season, the Médiathèque's Ciné-rencontre series explores this legacy. From Visconti to Bresson, from Chenal to Pialat, seven directors were influenced, directly or deeply, by Dostoevsky's world. Seven films, seven perspectives, one single fascination for tormented characters, oppressive atmospheres and moral questions with no easy answers. Each session features a screening followed by a lively debate. An invitation to see films differently, to understand what cinema does, or cannot do, with literature. SESSION 1 - Friday 23 October 2026 Dostoïevski, Le romanesque incarné by Yves Bernanos (2025) SESSION 2 - Friday 27 November 2026 White Nights by Luchino Visconti (1957) SESSION 3 - Friday 18 December 2026 Four Nights of a Dreamer by Robert Bresson (1971) SESSION 4 - Friday 29 January 2027 Crime and Punishment by Pierre Chenal (1935) SESSION 5 - Friday 26 February 2027 Pickpocket by Robert Bresson (1959) SESSION 6 - Friday 26 March 2027 Diary of a Country Priest by Robert Bresson (1951) SESSION 7 - Friday 30 April 2027 Under the Sun of Satan by Maurice Pialat (1987)
