From Grand-Guignol to Coralie Fargeat: Body horror, yesterday and today
Médiathèque, Montrouge
Saturday 28 November · 15:00
About
For adult audiences.
Titane, The Substance. Two French films, two female directors, two Palmes d'Or. And a genre establishing itself as one of contemporary cinema's most radical and fascinating forms: body horror. The horror of bodies mutating, decomposing, overflowing… Yet this form is by no means a recent invention! Indeed, it draws its roots from a well-established French tradition, from the 19th-century Grand-Guignol to fantastical literature, long before invading our screens.
It is this story that Fleur Hopkins-Loféron comes to tell, art historian, specialist in scientific imaginaries and cultural margins, and pop culture writer for the press. A talk questioning the social and cultural purpose of an often misunderstood genre, which speaks, in reality, to our human condition and the right to difference.
